The name "Skookum" comes from Pacific Northwest/Canadian Chinook Jargon used until about the 1930's. It has a variety of positive connotations such as "best", "powerful", "first rate", "tough", "trustworthy", "reliable".

If she wasn't the only puppy, we never would have kept her with those patched ears, since they disqualify her from the conformation show ring. But kept her we did, with no regrets. Skookum is a dog trainer's dream, complete with fabulous comformation, compact size of only 19 inches, intelligence, drive and willingness to please. Our little cutie is also a little firebrand. She is a delight to run in the agility ring, as she does everything with great gusto and enthusiasm.

Skookum currently competes at the Excellent level in AKC agility. We have been in the obedience ring only sparingly and have just started at the Open level. Skookum is a "CD" - AKC Companion Dog. She is also a "TD" - AKC Tracking Dog, easily passing on her first try. This makes her an AKC "VCD1" - Versatile Companion Dog, which required proficiency in the three diciplines of obedience, tracking and agility. There were only two Dalmatians in the country awarded VCD titles in 2009.

Skookum has just earned her first MACH (agility championship) points in a couple of Jumpers classes in early 2010 and is ranked #5 Excellent A Jumpers with Weaves Dalmatian for 2009. In January, we tested the obedience waters at the Mt Hood Specialty show and got first place in the Open A Class and High in Trial at the Specialty for Skookum's first Open leg and her third High in Trial in Obedience.
